Poured Glass Slab over photograph
11” x 16”
Exploring the body as a tool to create and communicate.
This glass slab was created as part of the Lip Reading project. Several slabs were made that stood on their own. It is a reminder of the glass screens that are everywhere in the modern world.
Inspired by Bruce Nauman's "Lip Sync" video. This video is part of an installation where the images are projected on wall mounted glass slabs. The glass slabs mimic the glass electronic screens we look at constantly in our lives. The words are meant to blend together, and confuse, forcing the viewer to try to pick out words and meaning. This work explores the isolation and the challenges of communicating in the electronic age.
This is a part of a video series I created to emphasize how important light is to the Deaf. This video installation is projected from the ceiling down onto the floor over a large collection of broken glass. The work explores the way technology affects deaf communication. ASL requires light. It also requires visual attention. There is often a breakdown in understanding between hearing and deaf because the requirements for communication are so different.
Inspired by Richard Serra's "Hand Catching Lead". This video explores the idea of the hand as a tool that can communicate, create and destroy.
We live lives of repetition. We form habits. This piece explores the pattern of life that we create and experience so much it becomes invisible.
This Isolation Helmet was part of an installation piece. As a deaf person in a hearing world it is easy to feel isolated. This installation piece creates a realization that is obvious to everyone. You can see me, but you can’t speak to me.
This sculpture is welded together using found pieces of metal, including many railroad ties found on the roads near my home as I was growing up.
This is a hinged box created with found pieces of metal.
